Frustrated With Facebook Ads?

You’re not alone.

Facebook can be a powerful way to get your message out to the right kind of people. But if you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s easy to waste A LOT of money.

For the next 24 hours, I’m offering you the chance to get a half-hour of actionable and specific Facebook Ads advice for just $29. My regular rate for this type of client call is $149 per hour and I don’t generally do half-hour blocks. Since this is more than 60% off, I’m only accepting the first 10 people to register. The odds are very good that I’m not going to be offering anything this inexpensive ever again.

Common Problems with Facebook Pages & Facebook Ads

My Facebook posts don’t reach all my fans.

If you manage a Facebook page, you might be aware that simply posting to your page doesn’t reach 100% of your fans.

If this is the first time you’re hearing about it, I’m sorry. It sucks.

But it is what it is.

Facebook’s algorithm decides whether your post is interesting and then decides whether to show that post to your fans.

It’s something they have to do because of the sheer volume of businesses posting shitty content on Facebook.

The sooner you come to terms with it and make a plan for dealing with it the better off you’ll be.

My Facebook ads keep getting rejected.

There are tons of reasons why your Facebook ads might be getting rejected.

The most common reason is that you’ve got too much text on the image associated with your ad.

Facebook’s guidelines say “Ads may not include images with text that covers more than 20% of the image’s area.” You can use their grid tool to test your image before you post.

Some other common reasons for your ad getting rejected include…

  • Profanity – that includes both “Oh shit!” and “Oh sh*t!”
  • Using Facebook’s logo
  • Using material that infringes on someone else’s copyright or trademark
  • Illegal, prescription and/or recreational drugs
  • Adult content – this includes anything “suggestive” or “sexually provocative”

There’s loads and loads of reasons why Facebook might be rejecting your ads. These are only a few. And you have virtually no recourse for appealing these rejections with Facebook if you feel like they were wrong to reject you.

I‘m running ads but they don’t work.

If you’re running Facebook ads and you think they’re not working, it’s often caused by one of the following things:

  • Your content sucks – if your post, link, image, or video isn’t good, no amount of advertising will fix it. You’re going to need to start creating better content.
  • Your geography targeting – if you own a bar in Baltimore, MD, and you haven’t limited your targeting to people within a small radius of Baltimore, you’re literally pissing money away. Don’t laugh…I see this ALL the time.
  • Interests and behavioral targeting – the interest and behavioral targeting you use, should be specific. If your ads target millions of people that are loosely defined, you’re probably wasting money.
  • You’re not targeting a WARM audience – if the people seeing your ads have never heard of you or purchased something from you, it can be hard to get them to buy from you. If you’ve got a large list of email addresses, you can increase the effectiveness of your ads by targeting those email addresses using custom audiences.

I‘ve never used Facebook ads and I don’t know where to start.

The Boost button isn’t a bad place to start. You can get your feet wet running a very small test and spend $5 or $10 to start.

As you get more comfortable, you’re going to want to switch to the Facebook Ads Manager or Power Editor. The features and targeting in those tools are extremely powerful.

I’m running ads to a YouTube video. Why am I getting so few views?

If you’re posting a link to a YouTube or Vimeo video and running ads promoting that post, stop. You’re wasting money.

Upload the video directly into Facebook and run ads for video views.

Isn‘t Facebook’s algorithm just a scam to get me to buy ads?

I hear this constantly.

The short answer is “Yes. Yes, it is.”

The nuanced answer is below.

Facebook started in a dorm room at Harvard to help geeks get laid cause Mark Zuckerburg was upset about a girl. As Facebook added features and moved from only letting students sign up to letting everyone have an account, things started to change. Almost immediately, marketers rushed in the hoping to ruin it just like they ruin fucking EVERYTHING. As Facebook grew, it started gathering more and more data on its users and the things that matter to them. Businesses followed and started pages trying to sell everything from lawn care to boner pills. Facebook had to decide whether it would show the average user what every one of their friends and every page they liked was posting. If Facebook hadn’t introduced its algorithm, your newsfeed would be a crowded mess of all sorts of boring nonsense. First and foremost, Facebook’s algorithm is a way for Facebook to make sure that the average user has a good experience on their platform. But they were also smart enough to realize that all the data they were collecting on their users would be valuable to marketers and business owners.

The good news is that as Facebook grew and their users started to share more and more data, they launched a self-service ads platform.  Skip ahead to today and you can target men that are 18 to 24 living in North Carolina who are fans of the Carolina Hurricanes. Or you can target women who are mothers who like organic products. Or you can retarget your website traffic and turn those visitors into fans of your business page. You can even grow your email list without the target ever needing to leave Facebook.

But by all means…If you read all of this and still believe that Facebook’s algorithm is just a way for them to get some money out of you, please DON’T sign up. We’re not going to get along.

How much do I have to spend?

You can get started with almost nothing. I work with clients that spend thousands every month and clients who’ve been spending less than $100 per month.

There’s virtually no barrier to getting started.

If you’re willing to spend a decent amount of money and try what might seem like unorthodox ideas, you can still absolutely crush it with Facebook ads.

Is it less expensive than Google PPC?

In pretty much all industries, your cost per click for a Facebook ad is going to be substantially less expensive than Google PPC.

Who The F*ck Are You?

My name’s Shane Powers. I’ve managed millions in advertising dollars in the last 10 years.

While I was Director of Marketing for a multi-million dollar jewelry brand, I managed placement for full-page ads in magazines like O (Oprah’s magazine) and Cosmopolitan. I helped thousands of retail stores with more than a million direct mail pieces. And in 2009, I ran my first Facebook ads.

Since then, I’ve helped companies from all sorts of industries find more customers online using paid traffic from Google and Facebook. I’ve managed Facebook pages with hundreds of thousands of fans, pages that were just starting out and everything in between.

For the average small business, there is nothing as powerful as Facebook Ads.

I’m not going to sit here and feed you a bunch of bullshit about how you’re going to be rich or how you’ll gain 10’s of thousands of followers in days with little or no investment. What you’ll get is answers to your most frustrating problems and actionable advice for how you can reach more of the right kind of people, reduce the cost of your ads, and improve your existing ad targeting.
